pistol can be semiautomatic and maybe automatic
1. Lever Action
• The lever is fixed below the trigger. It acts as an additional trigger guard. • When it is operated, it extracts the fired cartridge and cocks the rifle. • The carrier block gets pushed upwards, that loads a live cartridge. • When the lever is brought to normal position, a rod places the live cartridge in the chamber and carrier block takes its place.
2. Bolt Action
• Loading and unloading operations are carried out through a steel bolt with a knob. • In forward normal position, bolt is locked with knob turned to one side, sealing the chamber. • Firing pin assembly is inside the bolt. So when trigger is pressed, pin moves forward through a hole in the bolt head to strike primer. • Bolt head is fitted with extractor. When the bolt is drawn backward, the fired cartridge trails along with the bolt. When it reached the ejection hole, an ejection device strikes with sufficient force to throw the cartridge out. • Again as the bolt is pushed forward, it picks up a cartridge and places it in chamber. Forward motion also locks the weapon. Turning the bolt to one side seals the chamber.
3. Gas-operated
• Firearm has hole in the barrel at suitable distance from muzzle. • Predetermined amount of gas escapes and operates a piston. • Piston activates a rod, that pushes breech block backwards. • Simultaneously, it extracts fired shell. It strikes against ejector rod and thrown out. • On return path, breech block picks up live cartridge from magazine. The cartridge is loaded in the chamber and sealed and locked automatically.
• To this list you can add: a) Recoil operated b) Blow-back Operated c) Retarded blow back operated 4. 4. Pump action
If you search online or in the e-books you can find these terms. If you still have a problem, do let me know.
